About Gardian Angel

Helping Improve Student Visibility Around School Buses

Founded in 2010 • Family-Owned • Patented Technology • Made in USA • Available in 26 States

Every school day, millions of students begin and end their day at a school bus stop. While the school bus remains one of the safest forms of transportation, loading and unloading are among the most critical moments in a student’s journey.

Gardian Angel was founded with a simple purpose: to explore how improved visibility could help support safer school bus operations during those moments.

Today, we design and manufacture patented lighting systems engineered specifically for school buses. Our products are built for the demands of pupil transportation and are used by school districts, contractors, and transportation professionals in states across the country.

More than a product company, we strive to be a trusted resource for the school transportation community by sharing educational information, monitoring regulatory developments, and supporting informed discussions about student safety.

Why We Exist

Some companies begin with a business plan.

Ours began with a question.

On January 21, 2010, a 15-year-old student from northwest Ohio was struck and killed while crossing the street to board her school bus before sunrise. The bus had its red warning lights activated when a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction failed to stop. According to public reports, the driver later stated:

“I never saw her.”

For Gardian Angel founder Steve Gardner, those words were impossible to forget.

After decades spent maintaining school bus fleets, Steve understood the importance of visibility during student loading and unloading. He believed there was an opportunity to explore a practical solution designed specifically for school buses.

That same day, he began sketching ideas that would eventually become the patented Gardian Angel School Bus Lighting System.

More than fifteen years later, our mission remains rooted in that same belief:

When students are easier to see,

everyone has a better opportunity to make safer decisions.

Built on Experience

Before founding Gardian Angel, Steve Gardner spent 35 years with the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities, including 20 years as a fleet and school bus mechanic and 15 years as Fleet Supervisor.

As an ASE Master Technician specializing in heavy trucks and buses and a longtime member of the Ohio School Bus Mechanics Association, Steve understood the realities of maintaining school bus fleets and the importance of equipment that performs reliably in everyday service.

That experience shaped every aspect of Gardian Angel’s development from durability and installation to long-term fleet reliability.

Turning an idea into a finished product required years of engineering, testing, legal protection, and personal commitment. Like many small businesses, our journey was built through persistence, family support, and a willingness to keep improving.

Growing One Conversation at a Time

Introducing new technology into school transportation requires more than a good idea.

It requires listening.

Every state establishes its own requirements for school bus equipment. Every transportation department has its own operating environment. Every fleet faces unique challenges.

Over the years, we’ve worked to earn trust by answering questions honestly, demonstrating our technology, and learning from transportation professionals across the country.

Today, Gardian Angel is available for use in 26 states, with each approval representing another opportunity to support student visibility during loading and unloading.

Contributing to the Conversation

School transportation safety is a shared responsibility involving educators, transportation professionals, manufacturers, policymakers, law enforcement, and government agencies.

Over the years, Gardian Angel has participated in conversations surrounding student visibility by sharing research, technical information, and educational resources with organizations evaluating school bus safety.

During the National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation into the 2018 Rochester, Indiana school bus stop crash, Gardian Angel was contacted by investigators seeking information related to school bus visibility technologies. Steve and Andrew Gardner met with investigators and provided research, testing documentation, and supporting materials for consideration as part of that investigation.

Publicly available NTSB records reference materials submitted by Gardian Angel, and the agency’s final report recommended further evaluation of technologies intended to improve student visibility around school buses.

Subsequent federal discussions regarding school bus safety technologies have also included references to Gardian Angel within publicly available documents.

We recognize that school transportation safety is continually evolving, and we remain committed to participating in those conversations through education, innovation, and responsible communication.

Historical references to government agencies, reports, legislation, and publicly available documents are provided for informational purposes only and should not be interpreted as endorsements, approvals, or recommendations of Gardian Angel or its products.

Our Values

Student Safety First

Every decision begins with one question: How can we help improve visibility for students during loading and unloading?

That mission continues to guide our products, educational efforts, and long-term vision.

Built for the Real World

School buses operate before sunrise, after sunset, in rain, snow, heat, and cold.

Our products are engineered with those realities in mind using commercial-grade components and purpose-built designs intended for the demands of fleet service.

Partnership Through Trust

We value the perspectives of transportation directors, mechanics, drivers, dealers, contractors, manufacturers, and state officials.

Listening has always been one of our greatest tools for improvement.

Innovation with Purpose

Technology should solve practical problems.

Our focus has never been innovation for its own sake, but thoughtful engineering that addresses real-world visibility challenges.

Our Commitment

Student safety deserves thoughtful engineering, honest communication, and continual learning.

That means we strive to:

  • Follow developments in school transportation safety.

  • Listen to transportation professionals.

  • Share accurate and transparent information.

  • Support evidence-based decision-making.

  • Continue improving our products and educational resources.

We recognize that no single technology eliminates risk. Meaningful improvements in school transportation come through engineering, education, enforcement, and collaboration. We are proud to contribute to that ongoing effort.

Why We Share Resources

School transportation safety extends well beyond any one manufacturer or product.

That’s why we invest in educational resources covering state regulations, federal reports, industry developments, and school bus safety topics. Whether someone is researching visibility technologies, reviewing state requirements, or simply looking to stay informed, we believe access to reliable information benefits the entire school transportation community.

Being a trusted resource is an important part of who we are.
